Return Right
Branding Return Right for BCRS to reframe national recycling
The Project
Practice Theory partnered with scheme operator Beverage Container Return Scheme (BCRS) Ltd. to create the name, strategic messaging, and nationwide visual identity for Return Right, Singapore’s first beverage container deposit return scheme.
The Brief
Although Singaporeans broadly acknowledge the environmental value of recycling, actual participation remains low. In introducing the nationwide Beverage Container Return Scheme, BCRS needed to bridge the gap between awareness and personal action. Fostering a lasting culture of shared responsibility demanded a consumer-facing brand that could shift perceptions away from seeing recycling as an effortful task.
The Approach
We reframed recycling from a passive chore into an active civic habit. By establishing the name Return Right, the strategy converts “return” into a motivating verb driven by convenience, clarity, and social currency. The strategic framework positions every returned container as an individual contribution that directly keeps valuable materials in circulation.
The Execution
The visual identity centres on interlocking arrows that symbolise closed-loop reuse and transforms circular economy principles into an intuitive public graphic. We created an underlying modular grid system grounded in the concept that small individual actions create collective impact, housing campaign iconography, frames, and bilingual informational typography. This cohesive visual language rolls out consistently across digital touchpoints, print collateral, and physical architecture.
What did we deliver?
- Brand strategy and naming: Formulated the strategic positioning around participation rather than waste, establishing the action-oriented brand name Return Right.
- Brand identity and motion systems: Designed the closed-loop mark, modular grid framework, and dynamic motion behaviours for physical and screen interfaces.
- Environmental graphics and rollout: Developed signage guidelines and collateral applications adapted for high-visibility public spaces and educational print touchpoints.
The Scale
The scheme deploys across a nationwide infrastructure of more than 2,000 Reverse Vending Machines and return points throughout Singapore. This extensive network requires the brand system to function recognisably across diverse neighbourhood hubs and supermarket environments.
The Impact
Return Right provides Singapore’s circular economy with an accessible, human-centred identity that lowers barriers to daily participation. By shifting public sentiment towards collective ownership, the brand establishes an enduring behavioural foundation for the nation's resource resilience.
