The Project
Practice Theory designed he publication of Dr. Yeo Kang Shua’s essay “The Nara Document at 30: Perspectives on Replication and Reconstruction in Architectural Conservation”.Written for the 2024 symposium celebrating the 30th anniversary of “The Nara Document of Authenticity”, the publication translates architectural conservation philosophy into a refined publication centered on conservation as both a physical and conceptual gesture.

The Brief
Documenting international architectural conservation discourse requires balancing intellectual rigour with clear, engaging editorial design. “The Nara Document at 30” needed to embody the essence of heritage preservation, where tangible restoration methods and intangible cultural philosophy hold equal weight, transforming standard proceedings into an enduring archival publication.

The Approach
Practice Theory approached the design through the lens of material sensitivity and spatial pacing. The strategic rationale centered on establishing a tactile conversation with text, white space, and visual documentation, ensuring the layout reflects the precision and care of heritage preservation.

The Execution
The studio used the technique of french folding to place imagery on the outer leaves while concealing the full text within. The format forces readers to either keep the book intact or cut its folds to access the essays, giving the symposium’s questions of authenticity, preservation, and intervention a tangible physical form.

What did we deliver?

  • Editorial design and content architecture: Structured complex questions posed in the essayinto a seamless, accessible reading experience.
  • Typographic and visual systems: Created a restrained, precise typographic layout mirroring the critical questions of heritage preservation.
  • Production management and curation: Oversaw material selection, binding details, and print execution to ensure the book functions as a durable archival object.

The Impact
The resulting publication successfully preserved academic proceedings as a cultural artefact, providing the symposium with a beautifully crafted physical manifestation of its conversations that resonates with architects, conservators and scholars across the heritage sector.
