The Project
Practice Theory designed Honourable Mansion, a book authored by architectural conservationist Dr. Yeo Kang Shua documenting the meticulous restoration of Singapore’s only intact Teochew courtyard dwelling, the House of Tan Yeok Nee.

The Brief
Dr. Yeo required an editorial publication that served as both an authoritative architectural document and a tribute to the invisible craftsmanship behind the year-long restoration. The book title, a play on "honourable mention", needed a physical format that reflected the spatial logic, cultural nuance, and material quality of Teochew architecture.

The Strategy
We developed a design strategy where architecture functions as text and text functions as architecture. By structuring the book like a physical dwelling, readers are invited to move through its three sections as if entering a house, crossing thresholds, dwelling in public courtyards, and retiring into quieter, private spaces.

The Execution
The continuous cover wrap recalls a courtyard enclosure, featuring blind-embossed details that reveal themselves only when light hits the surface. Divided into three distinct volumes and sections, Part I arranges text around a central visual void, Part II functions as a detachable pull-out companion book, and Part III houses supporting photo essays and glossaries. A signature ultramarine blue accent, drawn from the mansion's original paintwork, anchors annotations and square-bracket endnotes that echo architectural frames.

What did we deliver?

  • Editorial and narrative strategy: Conceptualised the spatial layout structure, multi-part volume breakdown, and architectural metaphor.
  • Publication and print packaging: Designed a multi-volume book set, custom continuous cover wrap, and tactile material finishes.
  • Typography and visual identity: Developed a typographic system utilising courtyard-inspired framing devices and an authentic ultramarine color accent.

The Impact
The publication stands as a tangible archival document that mirrors the spatial beauty of Teochew heritage, celebrating the craftsmen behind it. Its inventive editorial format connects this history to the landmark’s new chapter as a lifestyle destination for cultural discovery, gastronomy, and contemporary engagement.
